Surprise in the Mailbox!

The mailman brought me a very nice surprise yesterday!! I received my "Pay It Forward" from Jennifer at Through the Storms of Life!! I was going to post a picture yesterday, but I again ran out of time. Where does time go?

So, today I'm sharing a picture with you of Jennifer's "Pay It Forward" to me.

What do you think? Beautiful, isn't it? And to think she made it with her own hands. Thank you so much, Jennifer!! I love the cross you made for me, and I'll cherish it always!!

I'm still working on my "Pay It Forwards"!! Please don't think I've forgotten you because I haven't. They are all works in progress and will be sent out soon, but I'm not going to tell you when or show you pictures right now. It's just too much fun to receive a surprise in your mailbox!! I'll post pictures after everyone has received their "Pay It Forward".

I've been knitting some, and I finally finished the Mid-March KAL from Monthly Dishcloths.


This is the very first circular cloth that I've made, and it's done in Peaches 'n Creme Spring Meadows. I like this a lot, and I think I can see some more being done in the future.

I'm also working on a table runner that is also a KAL from Rachel's Knitting Room.



I haven't been able to do much outside work. The weather hasn't been cooperating very well!! It's either too cold or rainy.

Today was a very nice day, so I planted some pansies in the barrel by my mailbox when I came home from work. Hopefully, Spring will arrive and stay here soon so that I can get outside and do most of the gardening that I'm planning.

I have one area that is triangular shaped that is completely covered in wet leaves right now. I'm hoping to get that all cleaned up, plant a couple of tomato plants and the rest will be a flower garden.


Still working on knitting, but I've come across some very special counted cross stitch projects that I'm also working on. They're not far enough along to post pictures yet, but I'm sure that you'll love them when I do.

Been Doin' A Little Knitting!

Easter is coming, and I'm trying to get some things prepared for my girls for a small Easter package.

Dishcloths being one of their favorite things to receive, it's an easy guess as to what I've made them.

This is the ribbed diamond pattern designed by Noreen Hunter-Talbot
in apple green.

And here, again, is the Circle Cloth from Monthly Dishcloths. I'm giving these two to Cara since green is her favorite color.

This is also from Monthly Dishcloths, the March KAL called Pot of Gold. It actually is yellow, but my camera and colors sometimes don't get along!


And here are these circles again!! This one is made of self striping yarn also, and both of these are for Lindsay.

If I get ambitious enough, I may just make them each a satin pillowcase, too!! No candy for Easter!!

Things have been pretty quiet around here!! I've gotten over my illness, but unfortunately passed it on to Andrew and Cara. They are both starting to feel better, but Cara definitely had the worst of it.

More Surprises in My Mail!

I have a tendency to forget to pick up my mail. Thank you, Andrew, for always remembering to do this!!

I found two packages on my dining room table this morning, and look what the mailman brought me:

This is two skeins of Panda Superwash from Crystal Palace Yarns that I won in their Holiday KAL!! The color in Mint Print, and it is so soft!! I can't wait to get my hands on this!! But, it will have to be put on hold for a little while until I finish some other projects. This is a personal goal of mine this year: Start a project, finish a project!!

As you can see, I already have projects on the needles to finish before I begin another. So this will go into the Miles-proof bin for a little bit. I can see my next pair of socks starting to form in this yarn!!

Oh, no, you don't!! Don't even think about it, Beth!! This must wait until the other items are completed!! Don't pick up those DPN's--PUT THEM DOWN!!

Okay, that crisis is over!!

And I also received these two books from Kristen in her Christmas giveaway from Dancing in the Margins!!




WOW!! Two of some of my favorite things arriving in the mail on the same day!! Sure beats receiving only bills!!

New Project Started!

I have started a new project. This is certainly not the first pair of socks that I've ever started, but I've made up mind that these will be the first pair that I complete!!

This is the start of You and Me Socks designed by Debbie O'Neill. As if I didn't already have enough yarn, I joined the Sock of the Month Club--yes, there is such a thing as a sock of the month. Luckily you can join to receive a pattern and yarn every other month because realistically, I just don't have time to knit a pair of socks a month with all the other commitments (like work) that I have going on. But, every other month seems like something I could handle.

So, here is the start of my first sock that I am going to complete!!

I have about another inch of the ribbing to do, and then on the the pattern of the sock itself. We'll see how this goes, and I'll post some pictures as I go along--so you can see how this is coming and for my own accountability!!

Now, I've had some people ask me about dishcloths--why so many dishcloths? I belong to two different dishcloth groups--each knitting two dishcloths a month--that adds up to a lot of dishcloths in a year!!

I have to say this about dishcloths--they are versatile and useful in so many ways--not only for dishes!! I use them in the shower, to dust, the older ones I use to scrub the floors. And then I have these two daughters who are always asking for these for themselves and friends.

And here's the greatest thing about knitting a dishcloth--I almost always learn something new that I haven't tried before--a new stitch, a new technique--that I can carry over onto a project that will certainly cost more than a dishcloth. These are an inexpensive way to learn something new!!

I have a new one going on right now from Knit Dishcloths designed by my friend, Aunt Kathy. This one is going to be round with bobbles!! What??? Bobbles?? Well, I've tried these before without much success, but she has promised to help me!! Thank you, Aunt Kathy!!

Another question I've been asked--Do I love to knit and truly find it relaxing? Yes, I do!!

A cup of coffee, some good music, a skein of yarn and needles--I'm happy and set for a day!! (oh, but I have to go to work in order to pay for this enjoyment!)!!!

I've got to go now and get ready for work soon. There's about 4 inches of snow that I have to clean from my car before I can go anywhere!! I'll be sure to be back later and share some pictures of the most snow we've had this year. I think Aunt Kathy has it all at her house--would you mind sharing--just a little bit, Kathy? We're missing our snow here this year!!

To Do Today

Let's see!! I have a lot to get accomplished today, so I thought I would make a list:

• Go to work from 8-12 this morning.

• Finish the two traveling scarves that I need to send out this weekend.

• Mail out my dishcloth exchange that should have been there by now.

• Update my "Love Dare" on "The Power of Your Love".

• Do something on Christmas projects that I have started.

• And, oh, yes, clean up the mess that Miles has again made with my yarn!! This kitty, I don't know what to do with him!! I have all my yarn in boxes with lids, and he still managed to get into one of them. He took the lid off, and last night I came home to this--

This is only a portion of the mess he has made. Luckily, it was only balls of scrap yarn, but still---

Well, with so much to do, I guess I'd better get started now!!

Today We Meet Mrs. Robertson

No, this isn't really a picture of me as a child, but it could have been.

I was visiting my friend Kay's blog today, and she is doing a series on loneliness, about how we need to reach out to others who are lonely, if we are lonely we need to pray and think about what we can do to alleviate this feeling of loneliness. It's possible to be in an entire crowd of people and still feel lonely.

And reading her posts regarding loneliness, reminded me of Mrs. Robertson. So, I decided to introduce you to her.

Fade back about 46 years--the year is 1962--I am eight years old. My father passed away and my mother returned to work full time. My brother was 13. My grandmother lived with us, but she was a very busy lady--didn't have too much time for kids getting in her way.

It is the summer--I am alone. I'm not allowed to go out of the house to play when no adult is home, so I am more or less stuck there--alone.

Then, some excitement came into my neighborhood. A new neighbor moving in across the street!! I saw her from my living room window, playing outside with her two children and a baby in a stroller. I wanted to go outside to see the little children and the baby, but I knew I wasn't allowed.

So, I continued watching through the window.

One evening, our doorbell rang. Who was on the other side of the door? Why it was the lady from across the street!! She introduced herself to my mother and said that she really needed some help with her three small children. She had seen me watching out the window, and could I be allowed to come during the day and help her?

And, so it began.......everyday I would go to Mrs. Robertson's house across the street to help her with her children--Andrew, Meg and Beth. None of them were school age yet--she was a very busy mom.

Yes, I helped her with her children, helped her with her daily household chores, and I was so happy!

Mrs. Robertson always made all of her own clothing and all of her children's clothing. One day she offered to teach me to knit. She was so patient with me as I struggled through the casting on, the learning of the basic knit stitch, then on to purling, then on to more complicated stitches.

She even let me use her sewing machine to help with some of the children's clothes, and then we made a dress for me!

At the time, I thought that I was being of a great help to her, and I'm sure that in some ways I was. But, as I look back on this time, I now know that she saw a lonely little girl looking out of her living room window, and she decided to reach out to me and help alleviate this loneliness.

More than anything that she taught me, I learned that loneliness in this life is not a necessary portion. All we need to do is reach out to someone, offer them a kind word, send them a little note to let them know we are thinking of them, encourage and affirm someone.

I ask you today to think about this--reach out and touch someone you know that is lonely in some way.

If you, yourself, are lonely, think about ways that you can help to lift your loneliness. There are many people in this world, in your own neighborhood, who need a helping hand, a word of kindness, a friend.

The best way to rid yourself of loneliness is to help another who is feeling the same way.

So, today, I thank Mrs. Robertson, for seeing a lonely little girl, making the effort which led to a huge difference in my life.

And for those who know me, the answer is yes--my son is named after her son--Andrew.

Movin' That Kitty!!

Today is "Weigh-In Day"!!!! As you can see from my kitty tracker, I've lost 6 pounds in two weeks!! Not too shabby, I think!!

Work was its usual self today--a lot of people calling in to schedule their flu shots, a lot of grumbling patients, and yet we still had time for a few good laughs.

Tonight, I have a couple of phone calls to make regarding new Small Group members and then on to knitting these Christmas presents. I have a cone of natural here already, so I'm going to use that for one of the market bags for Lindsay to see how it turns out. If I like it, I'll probably make her one in another color.

I started the Irish Hiking Scarf this morning before I left for work. Only about an inch of that done so far, but it's a start!

My Weekend--So Far!!

So far, this has been a nice weekend. Friday night, my Small Group had a get-together just for social purposes. We each brought an appetizer-type food, and we sat and talked and laughed and played "Apples to Apples". I love being with them--a great group of people just enjoying each other's company.

I did take some pictures, and I spent some time looking (again) for my UB cable (see, I even know the proper name, now!) so that I could share one in particular. But, it is gone again! I'll be willing to take bets that Miles "The Sock Destroyer" has something to do with this!! It is always sitting right beside my computer, and it is gone!!

When I find it, whether the picture goes with what I'm writing about or not, I'll be sure to share it with you!

Saturday was spent doing household necessities--paying bills (Thank you, God for providing for me--there was enough to cover all the bills plus a little extra!), running to the post office to mail said bills and a book to someone, then on to the grocery store to buy only healthy food.

I'm following the e-mealz plan (point system for two). This is how I lost almost 5 pounds last week! Since I have a lot of the things left over from last week, my bill at the grocery store was only $53!!

This plan is amazing!! Only $5 a month, and you can choose which plan you want to use--regular for 5 or 6 people, low-fat for 5 or 6 people, plans for 2 people, and more. This even comes with a list to take to the store so you know exactly what you need for each recipe. I've had leftovers to take to work for lunch, so this is just wonderful.

I wasn't going to do this--thinking to myself--an extra $5 a month--but then my son who has gone from over 300 pounds to 190 and wants to stay that way--said that we should and he would pay for it! So, off we go!

This plan takes the thinking of "what should I make, what should I eat, how many can I have" right out of the weight loss problem! If you're interested, you should check it out! Just click on the link at the bottom of my blog, and it will take you right to their site!!

Then yesterday afternoon, I almost completed two new items for my etsy store. They should be up by this afternoon.

The blanket doesn't count in the KAL because I started it before October 1st. Oh, well!!

Thursday--it's been a long week--even though I only worked half-days every day but today because of the youngest being here from Texas. And, tomorrow--YEAH!!!---I don't have to go to work at all!!

I'll be so glad to have a day away from the workplace. It's just been crazier than usual--trying to train a new person, school physicals, sports physicals, and the never-ending sinus problems and allergies.

I don't know what we're going to do tomorrow, but we're going to do something fun--I can guarantee that!! I'll be sure to take my camera in case I see anything interesting.

My young Texas transplant always like to cook a meal while she's visiting, so tonight was the night. She made chicken parmesan, zucchini with a tomato, cheese and garlic sauce and garlic breadknots. She's turned into quite the good cook!! All three kids were here for dinner, and it was nice to be all together once again.

Tonight the kids are off to the river to spend some time with friends. One of their friend's parents have a pontoon boat, and it should be a beautiful night to cruise up and down the river.

Me?--I'm going to finish a couple of projects I have sitting around just waiting for me. I have decided that I need to finish up some things before I start anything new. That's always hard for me because I see a project and want to get started on it right away. Then, before I know it I have too many things to finish, and I don't know where to begin again!!

And, those socks!! They're going to wait until my daughter leaves to go home. That way I'll have some time to concentrate on what I'm doing.

Dishcloth Exchange

I belong to a group called "The Gathering Room". Every month they host several exchanges. This month I joined the dishcloth exchange.

I received my surprise from my exchange partner on Friday. Here's a picture of what I received:

Three beautiful dishcloths--the teal one is in a pinwheel design, the rose colored one is a rectangular shape with a ruffle on either end. the green one is made of Japanese yarn that is treated with silver ions to help prevent the dishcloth from getting "stinky". And, to top that off, my partner sent me some of the Japanese yarn to try in pink. I also received some body balm in raspberry guava (hmmm.....smells so nice) and natural spring. I tried the raspberry guava today, and my skin just feels so soft. I think I'm going to have to ask her where she bought this and get some for myself.

On the home front--my youngest daughter flew in from Texas last evening at midnight. She's only here until Friday, and then I won't see her again until Christmas. I just don't think she realizes how much I miss her, even though I tell her all the time.

She's lived in Texas for just about 4 years now, and I'm proud of her. She's made it on her own--working and going to school. She's happy there, so I am happy for her.

Tomorrow night is my Small Group picnic. So far, two of my three kids are going. Hopefully, the third will follow suit. I think it will be good for all of them to be around these wonderful people--people who love and care unconditionally.

My children have been through so much growing up that I am amazed that they are strong and basically self-sufficient. Not that there aren't still issues that they each haven't dealt with--there are. But, each will have to deal with their own issues in their own time--when they are ready to face the truth, face the reality of past situations, and finally just let it go.

So, here it is Sunday already, and what did I get accomplished this weekend?? Did I clean like I told myself I was going to do? Of course not!! A a couple of loads of laundry this afternoon, and that was about it into my ventures of housecleaning.













What I did accomplish was the first part of my very first sock. Now, realize that I have tried this before and failed. I've never gotten so far as past the ribbing for the cuff.













Here's my SAL:

As usual, my picture isn't very good. But, there are cables down the back of heel flap, which is what this is. When I came home from church, I finished this, turned the heel, and now I'm working on the instep of this sock, which also has a cable design. I can hardly believe that I've come this far on this sock!!

I'm almost finished both of my KAL's. I have the instructions for both of them to be finished today, but I put them aside in favor of working on this sock.

And, here's a picture of my little kitty, Miles. Remember, Miles??

He's very hard to take a picture of because he's always on the move. I just happened to catch him waking up from a nap! He is a very actice kitty, but he learned early on that yarn is not a playtoy!

I just received a weather bulletin that we're going to have severe thunderstorms. I can't wait!! I love a good thunderstom. All that power unleashed--reminds me of the fact that God is in power and He is the one in control, not me. No, not me--never. And what happens when I try to control things--that is when they begin to come unraveled!!

Just Today

Today has been a good day. I've felt well which is a plus all in itself!!

I've finished the two traveling scarves that have been waiting for me to finish and also boxed up the squares that I've been able to finish for The Ghana Project. Everyone is leaving for Ghana on 6/3, so these squares will be used in the afghans that will travel to Ghana in the late fall when the next trip is scheduled.

I've also managed to whip up a few dishcloths to send to soldiers in Afghanistan. I've heard from members of a knitting group that these soldiers are only issued a small washcloth and small towel. Imagine that--in a country where temperatures are over 100 degrees daily standing in the shade.

There are also e-mails from different individuals from different branches of the service requesting things like granola bars, baby wipes, soap, magazines, etc.

I'm not politically minded at all, but I do feel that these are our fellow men and women who are away from home, sometimes without basic needs. And if we can help supply them with what they need or want while they are away from home, then I feel that we should.

April 2008 Mid-Month KAL

I decided that I had better finish my mid-month April KAL before moving on to anything else. I realized that mid-May will be here soon and all of my size 7 needles are tied up with other projects. I'll probably be needing them, so I finished this. I had this green yarn purchased some time ago, and then didn't know what I was going to do with it. I like the way this turned out with the cream and green together.

If you look very closely, the little dots in each row resemble bunny ears, at least I think they do!

Now, to finish the beginning of May cloth before the mid-May begins!!

THE GHANA PROJECT

I am so excited I can just about stand myself!!!

I have been praying to God to show me how HE wants me to use my God given talent of knitting and crocheting. I know that this gift was given to me by God. When I was 8 years old, my Dad died. I spent most days after school alone and all day during the summer alone.

My neighbor from across the street, Mrs. Robertson, saw my loneliness. She came to our door one day and asked if I could come to her house to help her with her 3 young children. Being a child, I felt that I was doing her a favor. Now, as an adult, I realize that she was reaching out to me.

I did help her with her children, but she also taught me alot also. She taught me to knit, crochet, sew, cook and many aspects of being a good mother. I picked up the knitting and crocheting like I had been doing this since the day I was born!!

So, I knit, I crochet--and I give almost everything away. As I said earlier, I've been praying about how God wants me to use this talent. Today I received an e-mail from a member of a knitting group that I belong to. I have never heard from her previous to today. I don't even know her.

She pointed me in the direction of the Ghana Project--you just knit 7 inch squares--so many beautiful patterns to choose from--mail to Michigan, and then they are put together into an afghan to send to Ghana to children who are having surgeries, a comfort blankie!!

This is also especially close to me because most of this children are being treated for scoliosis (curvature of the spine). They have had no treatment for this and so require surgery to be corrected.

I also have scoliosis, but having lived in the US, I was able to be treated without surgery and before the damage was too great.

I do have to say that God answers my prayers in some unusual ways sometimes!! And I pray for the doctors, nurses, physical therapists and other volunteers who donate their expertise and time to this project.

A Christmas Dishcloth Story

Now, I know that it's not Christmas or even close to Christmas. But, I saw this dishcloth on someone's blog. She had made it for her mom for Christmas, and it's a dishcloth made to look like her mom's house.

I fell in love with this, so I had to make it! I don't know yet who will be the recipient of this cloth--maybe I'll do something different and keep it for myself!!

On another note, I've located a website called Newborns in Need. Since I have a TON of baby yarn that isn't being used at the moment, I've decided to contact our local chapter of Newborns in Need so that I can use my God given talent to help His smallest ones stay warm. I've just sent them an e-mail, so I'll keep you posted on that topic.

Our church service today was awesome!!! We're starting a new series called "iGod"--what would God be saying to you if He were in your iPod? And today--today I learned that God is my everything. I already knew that, but hearing it spoken to me, sung to me--well, this message just reinforced this in my heart and soul. God is always present, always powerful, always loving.

Our God is an awesome God!!

May KAL

Here's a picture of my beginning of May KAL. For those of you who don't know what a KAL is, I'll try to explain. KAL stands for "knit a long". In the beginning of May, I received (via e-mail, of course!) about 10 rows of instructions for about 5-6 days. I have no idea what I'm going to be knitting (except that it is a dishcloth). At the end of the 5-6 days, I have a completed project.

This occurs again on the 15th of May--5 to 6 days of instruction, and again another dishcloth. But, it's all a mystery until it's completed. And one of the really cool things--the second KAL of the month--I always learn a new stitch or a new technique that I can carry over onto other projects--love that--learning new things!!

I can see the heart in the bottom of this one and the beginnings of something else--maybe a butterfly? Any quesses??

I'll post another picture when it's completed and then we can all see what it really is. I was sure I was knitting a dishcloth with an Easter egg on it in April. But, I was wrong--it turned out to be a bunny!!

Right now, I'm TRYING to teach myself to knit socks. I'm almost finished the first part of the first one, and I have this beautiful new yarn staring me in the face just calling to me to make it into a pair of socks. Well, just stop calling to me, please!! I have to finish two socks because I have two feet, and you'll just have to wait!!

Easter Gift

I've finally finished the two dishcloths I plan to send to my daughter in Texas for Easter. This one is because I love her so much!! If you like it, you can check out the pattern on krisknits.blogspot.com. I'm getting closer and closer to opening my storefront on etsy. So much to do, so little time!!

I was supposed to be attending a meeting this evening, but I just received a phone call that it's been postponed. So, at least, I'll have this evening to work on some things!!

Last Night

Last night my Small Group met to conclude the series we are doing--"God As He Longs For You To See Him". We had communion as a group, and this was an outstanding experience for me.

When I think about what God has done for me, how He has provided for me (even when I was far from Him), how He sent Jesus to us so that we may know Him, draw close to Him, I am just overwhelmed.

Particularly this time of year, close to Easter, my thoughts are of Jesus--how He suffered and sacrificed Himself for me--for all of us--so that we may have hope and everlasting joy--an eternal life with Him in Heaven--I stand amazed and in awe!

On the knitting homefront, I am finished with my latest dishcloth project and am now working on my traveling scarf which I hope to send out tomorrow. Onward and upward to my etsy storefront--I have made the decision that I am working on something every evening--regardless!! This is something that I long to do, have been contemplating for so long--it will soon become a reality!!

Summer Sky

Ah, yes!!! Another project completed. Snowed today, but not enough to close our office. We did leave a little early, but not as early as I had hoped!!

I love the colors in this--reminds me that summer is on its way and MAYBE, just MAYBE a trip to the beach!!
